The Pure Norwegian Seafood Difference

Farming premium salmon involves making a set of choices around selecting the right broodstock, the right diet and creating the best possible environment of proper rearing. The following elements are a snapshot of what is needed to make Pure Norwegian Seafood’s high quality salmon.

  1. Start with strong fish

Pure Norwegian Seafood starts off with broodstock that is selected for robust fish instead of just fast growing salmon that are used in commodity farming. Muscle development, health and strength are paramount for premium fish

2. Feed them correctly

Marine inclusion for commodity farmed salmon can be as low as 15% to 20%. Over the years marine protein has been replaced by soy and vegetable-based protein because of it’s low cost and wide availability.  However, these increased soy levels in marine fish feeds can have an impact on the microbiome and digestive system of salmon. Digestion of the soy and the absorption of nutrients is difficult for salmon and many steps have to be taken to ensure that the fish meal is treated and supplements are added to compensate for the lack of nutrient absorption. There are also some unsuspected side effects that can come from high soy diets such as salmon blindness that can occur if the water temperature increases.

Princess premium salmon farmed by Pure Norwegian Seafood AS have a 70% minimum marine inclusive diet.

Pure Norwegian Seafood’s salmon is fed a highly controlled and sustainable diet. All marine ingredients are from sources certified to International Fish meal and Fish Oil code of

Responsible Supply (IFFO RS), Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) or equivalent standards.

All the feeds are locally produced, contain no GMOs and all ingredients are produced to ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 22000 and Global GAP standards.

Pure Norwegian Seafood’s premium farmed salmon, known under the Princess brand, is fed a diet that consists of 70% marine protein, all sourced from sustainable and traceable sources. Current Label Rouge, the venerated French quality standard, currently requires salmon to be fed a diet that includes at least 50% marine protein.

3. Space to grow

Pure Norwegian Seafood’s salmon is grown in spacious cages with a low density level. The level of 20g salmon / m3  which ultimately means  99.8% water and .2% fish.  The location of the farm was selected for its perfect water flow rates, levels of oxygen and temperature. The salmon are able to live in these perfect conditions, allowing for strong muscular development and space enough to express themselves with salmon schooling behavior as well as space for the animals to remove themselves from the pack if desired.
