Live Alaskan King Crab

from Alaska’s Bering Sea

Simply put - Alaskan Red King Crab is iconic.

As the largest crab species harvested worldwide, it is celebrated for its sweet, lobster-like flavor and delicate, tender meat.

Meet the Prout Family - the backbone of our Live Alaskan King Crab program

For over three generations, the Prout family has worked the cold, rich and pristine waters of Alaska, carrying forward a legacy of hard work, stewardship, and tradition. Today, aboard their vessel the F/V Silver Spray, homeported in Kodiak, they continue the journey to bring you one of the most sought-after seafoods in the world; the legendary Alaskan Red King Crab.

Meet Captain Bill

Entering his 49th year of crab fishing, captain Bill has built up a legacy, and a reputation as one of the best fishermen in the Bering Sea. With millions of pounds of crab caught over his lifetime, and tens of thousands of pots hauled, it is legend that "he only needs to whistle" for crab to come crawling aboard his vessel. He plans to turn the keys over to his son, Sterling, who is currently Silver Spray's chief engineer. They don't come any more seasoned than a 5 decade veteran in Captain Bill Prout.

Sterling (L), Gabriel (C) & Ashlan (R)

and the Prout boys…

Sterling: Fishing for nearly two decades alongside his father, Captain Bill, Sterling has learned from the best of the best when it comes to how to fish, be efficient, and stay safe on the water to make it back home. He quickly moved from greenhorn aboard the vessel to the chief engineer, maintaining and keeping up all aspects of the engine room to keep the vessel operating at optimum performance. His quick learning ability and absorption of legacy knowledge from his father have left no doubt on who should run the family business when Captain Bill decides to retire.

Gabriel: With nearly 25 years of fishing experience, Gabriel has been working alongside his father since he was 8 years old. While originally having no plans to be part of the family business, the call of the ocean and the legacy his father has built was too strong to get away from. After pursuing and graduating with a Bachelor's degree in science, he soon found himself drawn back to the bountiful waters of the bering sea to work alongside his brothers and father, and now is the "deckboss" for the boat operations.

Ashlan: The final piece of Captain Bill's legacy and crew, Ashlan works as the main deckhand for the vessel, and also has arguably one of the most important jobs of anyone on deck; the onboard chef. Curating and creating select meals for the crew is no easy task when battling 20 foot waves, but Ashlan is one of the best in the business with nearly 10 years of experience. The assortment of fresh seafood available makes creating simple yet exotic meals commonplace during the hard and difficult seasons.

Alaska King Crab

In 2021 and 2022, the fishery was temporarily closed, which was a tough hit for Alaska’s fishing fleet and communities. Yet these closures were conservation in action, safeguarding the future of this legendary species. Thanks to that stewardship, the fishery has reopened, and the Prout family is approaching it with fresh purpose and ideas.
